is a young city, especially when measured with European standards. In 1957 brothers Leonard and Jack Rosen purchased the tract for $678,000 and proceeded to turn the land north of the Caloosahatchee River into a "Waterfront Wonderland". Marsh land and pastures were divided by streets and canals. Overall, Cape Coral offers 400 miles of canals, some with access to the Gulf of Mexico, and 1,700 miles of paved roads. The first homes were built in 1958. The city was growing fast due to an aggressive marketing campaign.

In 1964 the Cape Coral Bridge opened, connecting the city with Fort Myers. A second bridge - the "Midpoint Memorial Bridge" - was finished in 1997 and is being extended to meet Burnt Store Road & Pine Island Road.

The oldest part of Cape Coral - the Yacht Club area in the southeast - was built in the 1960s. Other areas followed: the so-called "Gold Coast" in the East, the "Pelican Area" in the South. The most attractive properties are located southwest close to the water front - preferably with gulf and sailboat access.

One of the most appealing characteristics of Cape Coral and Southwest Florida is its terrific year-round weather. The area averages 335 days of bright sunshine each year - the other 30 days are just moderate sunshine. While the summers are very warm, humid and rainy, the winters in Cape Coral are absolutely gorgeous. Southwest Florida receives about 53 inches of rain each year, the majority of which falls from May through September. During the summer months, afternoon rains regularly roll in with heavy downpours and stormy conditions that may last only a few hours before subsiding. Then the sun reappears, heat and humidity return, and all is well until the next day when the cycle begins again.

The mild winter and windy summer allow a variety of activities all the around the year. Water sport, water-ski - and jet ski, windsurfing, tennis, squash, fish, bicycle rides, rollerblades, a water-amusement park, 5 golf courses - there is a lot of possibilities for sport-enthusiast. There are attractive and relaxing activities for everybody. You will find several islands near the coast of Cape Coral as well as white sand and clean naturally beaches. There are also Dolphins, which swim in the warm, clean water of the golf. Cape Coral offers several excellent restaurants, a water fun park with the appropriate name "Sun Splash," several shopping centers, parks, tennis courts, and golf courses. The proximity to Fort Myers enables Cape Coral residents to enjoy the restaurants, movie theaters, and shopping malls there as well. Sanibel Island with its shells, Naples with its great shopping malls, and Tampa and Orlando with their tourist attractions are not far away.
