Sanibel and Captiva Islands
The barrier islands of Sanibel and Captiva connect to the mainland by a three-mile-long causeway that stretches from the southwestern reaches of Fort Myers out across San Carlos Bay, where the Caloosahatchee River empties into the Gulf of Mexico.
Created by nature to protect the mainland, the palm-tree and flower-lined islands are famous for their beaches and the incredible variety of shells that wash up on their shores.
Throughout history, Sanibel and Captiva have been used variously as stopovers for Spanish explorers and resorts for the rich and famous, including one special cartoonist, Jay Norwood Darling, who helped create the 6,400-acre national wildlife refuge that bears his name.

Fort Myers
Downtown Fort Myers, also known as the River District, forms the core of a city that stretches for miles south along the Caloosahatchee River and east to the rural interior. Named for a Civil War-era army colonel, Fort Myers' history parallels that of Florida itself.

Tiny Matlacha (pronounced Mat-luh-SHAY) forms a bridge from the mainland to Pine Island, which, has only stop signs and courtesy to organize the flow of traffic. Matlacha occupies its own small island with a jumble of colorful shops and galleries, seafood markets, funky waterside restaurants and a community park that fronts Matlacha Pass, part of the Great Calusa Blueway paddling trail.

Lovers Key State Park

Cabbage Key
A high point of any trip to the islands is a visit to Cabbage Key, a 100-acre island off the northwest coast of Pine Island accessible only by boat. Cayo Costa Island & Mike Fuery's Shelling Tour
Cayo Costa is one of the largest barrier islands in Florida. There are no stores or businesses on this island, so intrepid beach-goers will have to make like pirates exploring a deserted island. Cayo Costa may feel remote because you can only access it by private boat or ferry. Cayo Costa State Park offers a diverse selection of outdoor activities. Gasparilla Island & Boca Grande
According to Florida folklore, Gasparilla Island gets its name from the legendary pirate captain José Gaspar - "Gasparilla", who had his base on the island and hid his fabulous treasure there. Today, Gasparilla Island is a perfect daytrip, much of the town of Boca Grande looks like another era. The mood is set by the Old Florida homes and tree-framed roadways. The island's calm is disrupted in the spring when anglers descend with a vengeance on Boca Grande Pass, considered among the best tarpon-fishing spots in the world.

Everglades City, called 'Gateway to the 10,000 Islands', is a charming mix of old and new and a reminder of an earlier age. This fishing village and mecca for sports fishermen is only 1 1/2 hours from Fort Myers.

The Ochopee Post Office is the smallest post office in the US. It is a tiny shed on U.S. Route 41 near Ochopee, Florida, 34141-9998 - located about 3 miles east of the intersection of US 41 and State Road 29. The post office is currently fully functional, serving the surrounding populations of Miccosukee and Seminole Indians. The local post clerk is often asked for the famous Ochopee post mark.

Cape Canaveral / Kennedy Space Center
Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is the NASA space vehicle launch facility and Launch Control Center (spaceport) on Merritt Island, Brevard County, Florida, United States. The site is near Cape Canaveral, midway between Miami and Jacksonville, Florida. It is 34 miles long and around 6 miles wide, covering 219 square miles. There is a visitor center and public tours and KSC is a major tourist destination for visitors to Florida. Because much of KSC is a restricted area and only nine percent of the land is developed, the site also serves as an important wildlife sanctuary.
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, operated by Delaware North Companies at no taxpayer expense, is home to a number of museums, two IMAX theatres, and various bus tours allowing visitors a closer look at various restricted areas that would otherwise not be possible. Base admission for people over age 12 is $38. Included in the base admission is tour-bus transportation into the restricted area to an observation gantry on the grounds of Launch Complex 39, and to the Apollo-Saturn V Center. The observation gantry provides unobstructed views of both launch pads and all of Kennedy Space Center property. The Apollo-Saturn V Center is a large museum built around its centerpiece exhibit, a restored Saturn V launch vehicle, and features other space related exhibits, including an Apollo capsule. Two theaters allow the visitor to relive parts of the Apollo program. One simulates the environment inside an Apollo-era firing room during an Apollo launch, and another simulates the Apollo 11 landing. The tour also includes a visit to a building where modules for the International Space Station are tested.
